Grand Traverse Triple Crown

Since its inception in 2015, the Grand Traverse Triple Crown has rapidly developed into a preeminent multi-sport / multi-season endurance challenge.

With its legacy firmly planted as the toughest point-to-point ski race in North America, the GT Triple Crown defines a new generation of mountain sports competition.  A singular test of three pinnacle mountain disciplines – Ski, Trail Run & Mountain Bike, will challenge both individual perseverance while also demanding concerted team strategizing in the first race stage  –  the ski to Aspen.

Triple Crown and Priority registration opens on November 17th.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Priority registration is early registration. It opens before the General Registration (which opens each year at 12:01 on 12/01). Priority registration requires you to pay the full registration fee, but rather than stressing about whether or not you’ll get into the race on 12/01, you get a couple of extra weeks to register at your leisure.

Priority Registration will open on November 17, 2024, for the Ski race for the first 75 athletes who commit themselves to the Triple Crown Series for that calendar year. These athletes will secure a Team slot into that year’s Ski race and their individual registration for both Summer GT events. Simply select “Triple Crown Registration” when the registration link opens.

Priority Registration is also open to 2024 volunteers who worked qualifying difficult-to-fill positions.

  • No, however entry into the Ski race can be challenging, as General Registration sells out rapidly on December 1st.

Any athlete who receives a qualified 2024 Ski finish time may, at a later date, opt to enroll in the summer events as a Dual Sport athlete, thereby becoming an eligible Triple Crown contender.  Athletes may register for the Run, Bike, or Dual Sport events at anytime leading up to the summer races, pending availability of spots.

  • No. As long as one teammate commits to competing in the Triple Crown through the November priority registration,  this individual will have secured a team entry into the 2025 Ski event. If only one teammate is competing in the Triple Crown, that person should register FIRST as Team Captain.

A long walk to Aspen.

The Grand Traverse was conceived by Jan Runge in the 1900s. The race route was partially based on the historic mail routes that connected the Colorado mining towns of Crested Butte and Aspen in the 1880s. It also drew inspiration from the Patrouille des Glaciers, a point-to-point ski race in Switzerland. With the support of the community, Runge sent a brave field of competitors from Crested Butte over the Elk Mountains to Aspen in March of 1998, and the extraordinary Grand Traverse backcountry ski race was born. In 2012, event ownership was transferred to Crested Butte Nordic. The race is now a major fundraiser for the organization. In 2014, The Grand Traverse summer events were launched. Now, The Grand Traverse features a winter ski race, a summer mountain run, and a summer mountain bike.
